Lesson 2- Vietnamese Customs and culture
Outcomes:
- CUS3.3 Identities Describes different cultural influences and their contribution to Australian identities.
- CUS3.4 Cultural diversity Examines how cultures change through interactions with other cultures and the environment.
- Students will interpret graphs and data from provided resources (maths link)
Activity:
Students will explore Vietnamese customs and culture. Students are divided into groups of four. In 5 small groups, they will be provided with a cut out puzzle piece (See BLM 3) (Please note that the teacher must make these puzzle pieces by dividing the map up accordingly) and a resource to gather information about the customary and diverse cultural aspects of Vietnam. Roles will be given to each student in groups, such as the scribe, presenter, resource collector and artist to present information.
Groups will investigate:
1. Languages and ethnic groups
2. Population and Belief systems
3. Traditional music, art and innovations
4. Schools and youth culture
5. Currency and common occupations
- Students are to summarise their findings and represent it visually by drawing on their puzzle pieces. Those with the Education topic are to make a Venn diagram about the similarities and differences of schooling in Vietnam.
- Each group will then present to the class what they have gathered about Vietnamese customs and culture, and justify their drawings. Other students will listen attentively and record information on the given worksheet (See BLM 4). They will then collaborate to stick their puzzle pieces in the class’ map of Vietnam (See BLM 5).
- Have a class discussion on the similarities and differences to Australia.

- Discussions will measure student’s prior knowledge as well as skills to connect new information to familiar contexts, such as in the discussion of similiarities and differences to Australian customs and culture
- Students are to actively engage in listening to other groups presenting by recording what they have learnt from the other groups about the different topic areas (BLM)
